Sea Sense Education and Awareness Programmes

Community education and awareness is a fundamental part of Sea Sense work.  Sea Sense has an ongoing programme of education and awareness targeting all sectors of the community including village leaders, fishers, women’s groups and school pupils.

Considerable resources are focused on the delivery of creative and innovative environmental education programmes in schools to foster a conservation ethic in young people.  Sea Sense uses art, drama and song as tools to raise awareness of endangered marine species and the threats to the marine environment.  The Sea Sense Education Officer visits schools to give lectures and presentations on a range of topics including sea turtle biology, dugong conservation, sustainable fishing and waste management.  Each year Sea Sense organises a marine conservation competition in local schools to coincide with World Environment Day.  The competitions always have a marine theme and have produced some wonderfully creative pieces of art and drama covering issues such as turtle slaughter, dynamite fishing, plastic pollution and dugong extinction.

Sea Sense uses a variety of media to spread the conservation message to the wider community including education workshops and seminars, DVD shows and distribution of leaflets and posters.
